01 Unit 1 — Introduction of SHEETMETAL Design

What is Sheetmetal; materials in sheetmetal; different processes of sheet metals; design consideration of sheet metal; causes in sheet metal and its solutions; merits and demerits of sheet metal.

02 Unit 2 — Fundamentals of BIW Design and Engineering

What is BIW; importance and function of BIW; BIW types and components; BIW construction; BIW product cycle and flow charts; BIW terminologies and commodities; steps in BIW design or BIW detail engineering design process; BIW materials and its selection process; benchmarking process.

03 Unit 3 — Advanced BIW Design and Manufacturing Techniques

Impact of crashworthiness on BIW (section modulus); important regulations for BIW; hemming design guidelines with exercises; BIW welding methods and design guidelines; BIW joining process and design guidelines; master section and concept creation; joining processes and assemblies of BIW; DFM and DFS for BIW components; painting and sealant process of BIW.

04 Unit 4 — CAD Package

CAD methodologies while designing sheet metal (S/M) parts; S/M bracket creation as per customer need; dump to para (remastering); CAD practices taken according to CAD tests in industry; A-surface introduction and hemming technique; inner panel features design and benefits; drawings.

05 3D Development

Model preparation from IGES/STP, from Class A surface, missing surface, draft, etc.; A/B/C surface creation; mounting and strengthening features; positive/negative (Boolean) features.

06 Digital Mock Up (DMU) Analysis

Introduction to tolerance stack-up analysis; need of tolerance stack-up and its implementation; steps and process of tolerance stack-up for worst case and statistical method; basics of GD&T, MMC, LMC, RFS types of tolerances and datums; envelope calculation of virtual condition and resultant condition; effect of bonus tolerance on stack-up; stack-up using position tolerance plus and minus tolerancing; finding minimum and maximum gaps; tolerance stack-up analysis for fixed and floating fastener situations for clearance holes, screws and shafts.
